Buddy Hayes' Story

Buddy Hayes served in the Women's Army Corps (later incorporated into the Army) from 1977-1979.  She was was one of the first women to attend 62J Heavy Equipment School.  As a heavy equipment operator, she did drill and blast work in a rock quarry.  She is a member of Paralyzed Veterans of America as well as Disabled American Veterans.

As a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, Buddy worked for more than 15 years with children and adults with disabilities, and later taught special education classes to preschool students.  Shortly after retiring in 2003, Buddy was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).  But she hasn't let this stop her from remaining active and involved in her community.  While in her wheelchair, she serves as a motivational speaker and continues to compete in marathons and half-marathons (and has won two full-marathons and two half-marathons).

In order to help her maintain this busy lifestyle despite challenges with muscle coordination and balance, Buddy applied for a CCI Service Dog.  In August 2005, she graduated with Ellie, who helps her in a myriad of ways that make life a little easier: "[Ellie] loves to trot down the ramp and recycle.  She's also a shopoholic and loves to pay for things and get bags."
